Striae, also known as stretch marks, are caused a tearing of the dermis, initially red or blue, but which in time becomes colourless. Striae occur when skin expands rapidly e.g. the belly during pregnancy, but is also found on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks.

The Ellipse treatment

For red or blue striae (new striae) the Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology (SWT®) works by directing well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by haemoglobin in the red blood contained in the micro-blood vessels in the striae. The light energy is transformed into heat. This heat is used to damage the walls of the micro-blood vessels. The visible light produced by the Ellipse systems is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and wavelengths energy to destroy the target without damaging surrounding tissue. This technique is called "Selective Photothermolysis". For colourless striae (old striae) the Frax 1550, non-ablative fractional laser, is the better alternative due to the lack of haemoglobin in the striae. Most patients benefit from a combination treatment of SWT® and non-ablative fractional treatment.
